This year’s christmas card was le hoot. As usual, these hens started out as sketches and eventually worked their way into vector goodness. I do wish it was four french hens, however, because my french maid hen was hilarious. Oh well… into the chest of forgotten sketches with you.
Also, after last year’s lament over not having enough time to do a bit of hand lettering for the back, I made sure I had enough time this year. I sketched out a few different versions, but eventually decided on this one because it was the only one that fit the layout. Next year… plan the lettering layout in advance!
Merry Christmas internet!
Merry Christmas Internet!!
Since the world didn’t end I figured I’d wish everyone a happy holidays (even though it’s May right now…)
For my christmas card this year I continued on with my Twelve Days of Christmas. Even though this is the second year, the idea of doing Two Turlte Doves as Ninja Turtles with the words “Cowabunga Christmas” was the first concept I had for doing the whole series (that and Sonic the Hedgehog themed 5 Golden Rings).
I knew I wanted to have two flying birds positioned like a playing card, but coming up with a design was a challenge. Was it supposed to be two doves had turtle qualities, or turtles that had little dove wings. I spent the first couple of version design the latter, but nothing quite fit. Then one day my wife and I were watching some movie with a band in it, I think it was The Runaways, and the drummer had a cool looking dove on the kick drum. It was perfect! I hit pause, grabbed some paper and quickly drew a sketch that turned out to be fairly close to the final outcome.
It was a no-brainer choosing which turtles for the doves, Donatello being my wife’s favorite and Raphael being mine.
I do wish I had spent more time on the Back Text, it feels a bit forced to me. I think it would have been better to create it from scratch instead of altering a pre-existing font, but it still turned out nice.
Another thing I was really happy to get in with this year’s card was the ornament logo at the bottom. I wanted something that would tie the whole series together and I couldn’t come up with a design I loved till this year. When this project is all said and done (in 2023!) I’m planning on getting all 12 cards framed with the logo above them all. Perhaps carved out of some dark wood?
Merry Christmas from me and the wifey!
This year my wife wanted to start a 12 Days of Christmas set for our Christmas Cards. With the first day being “Partridge in a Pear Tree” I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to include my favorite Partridge, Danny
The back said “Come on get Happy Hoildays!”
(UPDATE) Here’s the back as well.
